Summary

Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable。

One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists。 Now it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate。 With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy。 These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen。 As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society。

Set in the 1940s post-war Hampshire, England, in the village of Chawton, home of Jane Austen。 A group of eight people gets interested in preserving the artifacts of their famous dead resident Jane Austen。 Best for those who have read most/all of her six novels, as the characters and plots are discussed throughout by the people in this novel。 Pleasant listening while doing gardening on successive Spring afternoons。

I love Jane Austen and have read many of her novels, so I understood the references throughout this book and enjoyed how her writing impacted each person in The Jane Austen Society and brought them together as a community。 However, the characters felt somewhat cliche, there were so many to keep track of, and the constant switching between perspectives and scenes in each chapter prevented me from every getting very invested in any of them。 I never felt very enthusiastic about the main romance and I love Jane Austen and have read many of her novels, so I understood the references throughout this book and enjoyed how her writing impacted each person in The Jane Austen Society and brought them together as a community。 However, the characters felt somewhat cliche, there were so many to keep track of, and the constant switching between perspectives and scenes in each chapter prevented me from every getting very invested in any of them。 I never felt very enthusiastic about the main romance and thought the ending was predictable, though heartwarming。 Overall, this was a light read that I would only recommend for Austen fans。 。。。more

Had a hard time getting into the book as it kept switching who was speaking。 Read some more reviews and realized there were some types of scenes I would rather not read about so I stopped。

3。5 I disliked the ending。 It needed more closure。 I think it would have been better if I had read the physical book instead of listening to the audiobook。 Don't get me wrong - Richard Armitage has an amazing voice! He just doesn't do a feminine accent that's appealing。 And his American accent needs some work。 Other than these two things it's a very lovely read。 3。5 I disliked the ending。 It needed more closure。 I think it would have been better if I had read the physical book instead of listening to the audiobook。 Don't get me wrong - Richard Armitage has an amazing voice! Not what I expectedI chose this book because I am a fan of some of Jane Austin's books。 This book was not at all what was expected。 It seemed to ramble and so I skimmed some。 It had no good characters to relate to。 Just a bunch of people interested in the writing of Jane Austin。 Not what I expectedI chose this book because I am a fan of some of Jane Austin's books。 This book was not at all what was expected。 It seemed to ramble and so I skimmed some。 It had no good characters to relate to。 Just a bunch of people interested in the writing of Jane Austin。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the latter half of this novel。 The beginning had me worried that there would be a lot of over-referencing of Austen characters and not enough of a plot, but it did redeem itself。 By the end, I was emotionally invested in the relationships and couldn't put the book down。 Don't give up on it, even if you aren't a huge Austen fan! Guess I’m going to have to dig into “Pride and Prejudice” or “Sense and Sensibility”。 However, even without familiarity of Austen’s work, the story flowed nicely and was the common denominator of the diverse characters。 Some of the dialogue was confusing, but overall, an enjoyable book。

DNF。 I just couldn’t stay interested。

Charming--I feel like this would make a nice British mini-series。 It's especially fun if you are familiar with Jane Austen's works。 I like the characters much more in the second half of the book after I had sorted out who was who (there are quite a few characters。) Charming--I feel like this would make a nice British mini-series。 It's especially fun if you are familiar with Jane Austen's works。 I like the characters much more in the second half of the book after I had sorted out who was who (there are quite a few characters。) 。。。more

A pleasant little book for book lovers and Jane Austen lovers。 I quite enjoyed it。 Good uplifting pandemic reading。 Reminds you why you love books - and other people! Just enough characterization and plot to keep you reading。 Well done。

I adore Austin, and Elizabeth Bennett is one of my favorite characters of all-time。 It was a book about people in the town where she spent the end of her life, from different walks of life, brought together by her writing。Though slow at times, I enjoyed most of the characters, and would love to explore the library just as Evie did。

I so wanted to like this book but it left me so disappointed and unsatisfied。 It feels like the beginnings of a really great book that was just published in its outline form。 Characters weren't as well developed as I had expected them to be。 As soon as I started to get hooked onto one of their arcs, the book would shift and gloss over events that were previously made out to be major issues/events。 Add in the fact that it was soooooooo slooowwwwwwww。 I only finished it bc I refuse to DNF another I so wanted to like this book but it left me so disappointed and unsatisfied。 It feels like the beginnings of a really great book that was just published in its outline form。 Characters weren't as well developed as I had expected them to be。 As soon as I started to get hooked onto one of their arcs, the book would shift and gloss over events that were previously made out to be major issues/events。 Add in the fact that it was soooooooo slooowwwwwwww。 I only finished it bc I refuse to DNF another book。 0。5 stars。 Great ideas, not well executed。 。。。more

What a lovely little book! Nice story, engaging characters。 I read it in a day because I was enjoying it so much。 It isn’t really surprising or unpredictable, just well told and appealed to my interests。

A lovely little journey in Jane Austen, but more importantly in the comfort she can give those dealing with pain。 A great group of rag tag characters who all needed each other in their lives but didn't know or realize。 I loved the bond they created and how they talked about Jane。 I wasn't a huge fan of parts of the ending, but it all wrapped up in a satisfying way so I have very few complaints, a great book that I would recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in Austen! I guess I'm not a big enough Austen fan to enjoy this book。 I've read 4 of 6, but the allusions were largely lost on me。 I enjoyed the contemporary story, and the characters were well drawn but I felt like an outsider throughout much of it。 I guess I'm not a big enough Austen fan to enjoy this book。 I've read 4 of 6, but the allusions were largely lost on me。 I enjoyed the contemporary story, and the characters were well drawn but I felt like an outsider throughout much of it。 。。。more

It took over 80 pages of character development to get to the plot。 While the writing style was enjoyable, as were the characters, I really wish the page turning plot in the second half of the book had been more intertwined into the plot as the characters were being introduced (and expanded on)。 Personally I didn’t like how the plot ended。 I thought it was a missed opportunity for a great ending, and even a set up for a sequel。 You do grow fond of the characters but I don’t think they’re true to It took over 80 pages of character development to get to the plot。 While the writing style was enjoyable, as were the characters, I really wish the page turning plot in the second half of the book had been more intertwined into the plot as the characters were being introduced (and expanded on)。 Personally I didn’t like how the plot ended。 I thought it was a missed opportunity for a great ending, and even a set up for a sequel。 You do grow fond of the characters but I don’t think they’re true to themselves, or the society in the end of the book。 She also hides a few cultural themes that weren’t needed in the book and honestly distract from the whole concept of the book。 I also didn’t find the writing style to be as Austen like as many like you claim。 It didn’t need to be, so I don’t find this to be a fault, but worth noting if it’s what makes you pick up this book。 While the characters have depth, they are not nearly as nuanced or complex as Austen would create。 It had so much potential but in the end, I’m glad I read it but wouldn’t reread it or purchase it。 。。。more

Jenner’s novel pays homage to Austen in a way that many other variations don’t。 She understands the Austen characters and their motivations, but in creating her characters and their motivations they are not talking to us as Austen’s characters but fans of Austen’s words, her thoughts, her dreams。 Jenner’s characters want to talk about Austen in a way that helps them deal with their own losses and pains, but they also want to preserve Austen’s great novels for generations to come and to do so by Jenner’s novel pays homage to Austen in a way that many other variations don’t。 She understands the Austen characters and their motivations, but in creating her characters and their motivations they are not talking to us as Austen’s characters but fans of Austen’s words, her thoughts, her dreams。 Jenner’s characters want to talk about Austen in a way that helps them deal with their own losses and pains, but they also want to preserve Austen’s great novels for generations to come and to do so by preserving her home in Chawton, even if it is against the wishes of the owner, Mr。 Knight。The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner, narrated by Richard Armitage, is a book not to be missed by Janeites。 I really loved Armitage’s narration — he was so soothing to listen to and he carried the character-driven novel really well。 Do not miss out on this gem。 。。。more

Raamatu autor on lugemise teinud äärmiselt meeldivaks。 Tegu on väga südamiku looga ja tegelastele on lihtne kaasa elada。 Lugu kulges rahulikult edasi, kuid sellegipoolest haaras leht lehelt aina endasse ja lõpuks ei saanud ma enam raamatut käest ära panna。 Lõpplahendusega ma päris rahule ei jäänud aga see ei rikkunud lugemiselamust。

Five things about The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner 3/5 ⭐️s1。 I hear Jane Austen, see pastel colors, and sweet scented roses and think I’m in for a light, heartfelt story。 I am wrong。 2。 This book is dark and dramatic。 A tangled web of small town lives and the loves and losses all kinds of wars bring。3。 It’s well-written but too much of a soap opera for me。 I did choose to finish it but it was very, very dramatic and quite depressing。 Even with a “nice” ending。 4。 Most of the time I just Five things about The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner 3/5 ⭐️s1。 I hear Jane Austen, see pastel colors, and sweet scented roses and think I’m in for a light, heartfelt story。 I am wrong。 2。 This book is dark and dramatic。 A tangled web of small town lives and the loves and losses all kinds of wars bring。3。 It’s well-written but too much of a soap opera for me。 I did choose to finish it but it was very, very dramatic and quite depressing。 Even with a “nice” ending。 4。 Most of the time I just wanted to shake these people and tell them to just say it!
